Creative Connections in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

PROJECT

Critical Design

How do we build creative connections in an era where artificial intelligence increasingly mediates our conversations?

This project is a provocation with an experimental design involving human participants and AI, where language models actively seek to foster creative intimacy. Through structured interactions, we examine how AI responses shape human expression, redefine agency, and blur the lines between co-creation and computation.

This study isn’t just about technology; it’s about what it means to be seen, heard, and understood, even when the voice responding is an Artificial Intelligence system in the form of a human proxy.

The work was driven by the creative collaboration of the community members of Parsons School of Design, The New School (Christine Chang, Sakshi Pandey, Kshitij Palresha, and Jeongki Lim), Little Crush, LLC (Ben Wyatt, Nicholas Brennan, and Richard Butterworth) and LG AI Research (Hwayoung Edward Lee, Jihoon Choi, and Ok CHAE).

The mission

METHODS

Artistic Research

At its core, this work challenges traditional notions of agency and co-creativity. Who holds creative control? How does AI alter our perceptions of self-expression and collaboration?

The pratice-based research unfolds across pre- and post-experiment interviews, participant reflections, and thematic analysis, revealing a spectrum of experiences—from skepticism to unexpected alignment with AI responses. As human voices take on machine-generated words, the study probes the limits of co-creation and emotional resonance in human-AI interactions and dialogue.

This is more than a technical study; it’s an inquiry into how we negotiate meaning, presence, and connection in an evolving digital landscape with the coexistence of human and digital species.

INSIGHTS

Short Film

A Cinematic Exploration of Artificial Intelligence and Human Connection

Beyond words, expressions, hesitations, and reactions reveal as much as what is said. The film can capture participants' raw, unfiltered moments as they navigate conversations shaped by AI. From moments of curiosity to unexpected emotional resonance, the film combines a visual and narrative study of human-AI relationships in action.

As AI-generated words are spoken aloud by human proxies, an interplay of spontaneity, constraint, and interpretation unfolds. Watch how connection evolves when machine intelligence becomes an invisible partner in dialogue.
